Nottingham Wireless Broadband
EMNET provides a powerful wireless broadband network for Nottingham businesses and public sector clients.
The network is already well established and fully operational over the Nottingham and surrounding area up to a distance of 15 kilometres.
EMNET successfully piloted the technology for multi tenant buildings the Nottingham City Centre including The Nottingham Fashion, Confetti Media Centre, The Designers Forum and a range of other buildings. As part of these services EMNET also installed high power wireless hotspots for public and dedicated use.
Connected companies are able to take advantage of cutting edge applications for high broadband networks such as streamlining communications (mail, voice, video & data) and collaborative use of software.
Our services provide Nottingham with a Wireless broadband network capable of far greater capacity and flexibility that anything currently available in the area.
Service speeds and capacities of the Network are able to rival SDSL and Leased Line services for a fraction of the cost and much swifter delivery time.

Wireless support for the Creative Industries
Over recent years the City of Nottingham has established itself as a centre for the creative industries and now boasts a large community of design, print, creative arts and media companies. Knowledge intensive industries tend to create and manage large amounts of electronic data, are ideally placed to make use of this infrastructure and exploit the opportunities offered by high levels of broadband over a quality controlled network.
In partnership with Nottingham Trent University EMNET has established a mobile wireless broadband service which is able to support creative industry events and festivals. Nottingham Trent is able to deploy high capacity mobile hot spots, web broadcasts and projection equipment in both urban and rural locations to support electronic and traditional arts and creative industries. A recent example is the online coverage of the NottDance festival from the Nottingham Old Market Square http://www.dance4.co.uk/ .
Grant funding is available to support the use of the Wireless project for creative Industries in the Region. To find out more please contact projects(at)emnet.co.uk
Wireless support for conferences and business events
EMNET used the flexibility and power of the Broadband Wireless to support the National Core Cities conference which was held in Nottingham in 2007.
Using a mobile wireless connection EMNET was able to provide a high speed synchronous Broadband hotspot in multiple locations within the Nottingham Playhouse.
The Wireless network allowed journalists to view streamed content, to send and receive editorial material and provide full national level coverage in an environment that previously had little of no Internet facilities.
EMNET were able to provide a full electronic authentication service to manage user access to the network along with a dedicated event document management system which allowed secure up and download of presentations and supporting materials both during and after the event. An example of this can be seen at http://web.emnet.co.uk/connectednottingham/ .
User feedback was very positive and the service is viewed as a great success by all involved.
Flexible deployment for business
One of the major advantages of the Wireless Broadband Network is the speed at which it can be delivered for clients. Unlike fixed cable based systems wireless connections can be set up very quickly and easily without long waits for engineers to set up cables or switch on services at the exchange.
Delivery time for an SDSL broadband connection is usually over two weeks. Delivery of a leasd line connection can be over sixty working days. The quickest we have been able to set up a wireless broadband client is in three hours.
A good example of a client using the system is the Nottingham Panthers Ice Hockey Team (http://www.panthers.co.uk/). The Panthers moved location and needed a connection which didn’t arrive as planned due to a customer service error on the part of a large UK telecoms company. They were told that a connection could be provided but this would take at least two weeks and even then delivery seemed far from certain. EMNET was able to connect the new offices and get them up and running in a couple of days.
Failover and disaster recovery
The wireless service provides an excellent broadband back up and failover service for businesses in the Nottingham area.
Although normal broadband provision tends to be reliable there are instances in which failure does happen and when it does this can be disastrous for businesses that rely on internet connection.
Because the wireless network does not use many of the services which supply ADSL and SDSL broadband users it is able to provide a separate point of access to the internet. This means that it is able to provide excellent network resilience and back up to other technologies.
Wireless hot spots
Wireless hot spots which are connected to the wireless broadband network have proved to be especially effective. The ability to send information up onto the internet as fast as it down loads has proved very popular with hot spot users. This feature makes the system very attractive when large files and images need to be moved and shared.
The ability to increase the bandwidth available on demand is also very useful for hotspots that have variable numbers of users.
Connection to the wireless network
A subscriber unit which is positioned to receive a signal is needed to connect to the network. The ideal positioning is within line of sight but this is not always needed as signals can be bounced off buildings and other structures.
Once the connection has been made the system has proved to be very reliable with very little down time.
Security
The network uses a technology platform which was originally developed for military use and was designed with security and resistance to jamming as a central feature.
The network has intrinsic encryption and connections automatically change or “hop” frequencies to avoid jamming and interception.
